Delhi 2 Dublin, the Celtic bhangra dance band from Canada, is currently on a UK tour. Seeing them perform live has been on my to do list for years and last weekend I was lucky enough to go to two of their gigs in Bristol and Devizes.
Compared to other artists I have seen live, there were a few things that D2D do differently. Fun audience participation, cute choreographed routines and an unmatched ability to get everyone moving, no matter what their age or ethnicity. It was amazing to see people who had never even heard of Delhi 2 Dublin surrender to the music and dance with the inhibition of a drunken uncle at a wedding.
Delhi 2 Dublin have four more gigs left in the UK. If you are lucky enough to go one, look out for a special download card called Remixes: Vol 1. It is only available at their concerts and features five remixes by guest producers. There are two remixes of Lighta and three versions of Turn Up The Stereo.
The Kight Riderz VIP Remix of Lighta is dark and infused with military style drumming. The B.R.E.E.D Remix has some great syncopated beats and is the most out there track on the download card.
The Chrome Rock Remix of Turn Up The Stereo is a favourite of band vocalist Sanjay. It is laid back, glittery and keeps the fiddle centre stage. My favourite remix is the last track. The Sol Rising Remix of Turn Up The Stereo is the most Desi remix. It exchanges the dhol for the tabla and is a great electro bhangra track. Dave Sharma's version leaves out most of the lyrics and is perfect for a rave after a Delhi 2 Dublin show.
Look out for the Sari-Clad Speakers interview with Delhi 2 Dublin up soon!
